Heart Bowls with 9 strings are an intimate treasure. The sound is at once rich and hugely variable as you can hear from the sound samples below. The modern tuning can be varied from warm major to devastating minor and the ancient pentatonic gives a simplicity of play because you simply cannot hit a wrong note in this scale. It is true that anyone can make music with a bowl like this. Many of our customers are people who, for much of their lives believed that they were ‘just not musical’ but who now play regularly.

Birch has a tenderness of tone that easily accesses our deepest feelings. Bringing harmony into areas of locked away sorrow and unresolved distress can affect our lives very deeply. Obtaining birch-wood of a size to make nine string instruments is a rare thing. This is the last piece of three trees that came down in woodland management two years ago. Since then I have not been able to find more.

Made by Wilfred at our Devon studios this bowl is nearly 40cm across and comes cased complete with a tuner, a manual and all that you need to bring music into your life.
