Lyre Bowl in Sycamore/Maple – 15string

Each wood has its own sound. Each sound has its own enthusiasts. This Sycamore Lyre bowl sounds remarkably rich and bright to me. I feel that this sound is comparable to many of the larger bowls we have made with more strings. but try for yourself. Listen deeply in to your own feelings about this sound, then compare it with this one, a similar bowl in Ash. Our own inbuilt character is the key to the way we meet the world and the choices we make. If we were not unique the world would be a far less wonderous place.

The sound of a large Lyre Bowl is powerful and can be felt in the body even if you are not touching the wood. This effect is important in Sound Healing, where they are found to produce deep states of relaxation, insight and emotional release in less than one third the time of a gong.

Every sense impression gives rise to an “after-image” within us. If we listen inwardly we can hear the hidden nature of whatever caused the impression. The sound of Ash brings an experience of courageous intent, youthful enthusiasm within us. This individual bowl has a particular firmness of intent, a feeling of reliable strength.  It takes some practice to distinguish this inner response from reactions we may feel from our personal history, but practice can lead us there.

European mountain maple is called sycamore in England. This one grew in Austria, near the workshop of Ramon Floride, the first to graduate as a Sounding Bowl maker. If you like this bowl you might enjoy comparing the sound with its Ash brother.

There are different ways of tuning this bowl. It can be used as an instrument with an African-style bilateral tuning, or as a single-sweep-harmonic, or “Gong-tuning,”  where a simple strum produces powerful harmonies, and every note you pick is in rich harmonic relationships with every other note. As with all larger Sounding Bowls this one comes with a hard case, soft lined and padded. And with an auto-tuner and manual.

This instrument offers years of service in Sound Healing, or as a personal instrument for novel musical exploration.
