Saturday Gratitude

Seven Exercises for Firm Ground Under Our Feet

6. Saturday: Gratitude

Gratitude appears easy.

In truth it is a very fruitful exercise. Practising gratitude makes so many parts of life easier.

As usual, there are two parts to this. The conscious appreciation of all the wonderful things that greet us each day, the morning light, birds, smiling faces, warmth, society, etc, etc, etc.

Then comes seeking to discover gratitude for those things that challenge us in life. The steady resistance life offers can be like wind against trees, without which they do not develop strong roots and fall over before maturity. Even the most shocking, and awful events can actually release the most wonderful results. Being fired may release a new creativity and determination in us. Losing a friend may connect us with the other side in unexpected ways, meeting disappointment faces us with a chance to fire up our determination and believe in our own strength. Seek, in your past, what downers may underpin the successes of today and apply those lessons to seeking to find gratitude for the struggles now coming your way.

The practice of gratitude can be like bees to the flowers of our lives. The fruits that come from this are sweet.

What is your most fruitful gratitude-practice?
